Tennis tournament in Cincinnati - Olympic champion Alexander Zverev reaches the semifinals:

Olympic tennis champion Alexander Zverev clearly won the first duel with the Norwegian Casper Ruud and reached the semifinals at the Masters Series tournament in Cincinnati.

The 24-year-old from Hamburg beat the two-year-old eleventh in the world rankings on Friday (local time) in just 59 minutes 6: 1, 6: 3.

A good week before the start of the US Open in New York, Zverev meets the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas in the fight for a place in the final.

The other men's semifinals are contested by the Russians Daniil Medvedev and Andrei Rublev. This means that the four top seeders of the hardcourt event are in the semifinals.

Zverev had never played against Ruud before. On the way to Zverev's tournament victory in Acapulco in March, Ruud could not make the quarter-finals due to an injury to his wrist.

The up-and-coming Norwegian caused a sensation this summer with three titles in a row when he won the clay-court tournaments in Bastad, Gstaad and Kitzbühel.

However, he had no chance against Zverev, who played strong as at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The world number five took his opponent's first service game from his opponent and, after two more breaks, secured the first set 6: 1 in just 24 minutes.

In the second, Zverev fell 2-0 down after losing a serve but ultimately secured victory after less than an hour.

Against Tsitsipas, who was in the second position, Zverev has a score of 2: 6. The last duel so far he lost at the French Open in Paris this year in the semifinals in five sets.

In the women's competition held in parallel, the three-time Grand Slam winner Angelique Kerber had previously made it into the semifinals.

The 33-year-old Kieler led in a duel between two former Wimbledon winners 6: 4, 3: 3 against Petra Kvitova when the ailing Czech could no longer play.

Kerber now has a chance to take revenge for the lost Wimbledon semi-finals against world number one Ashleigh Barty from Australia.
