Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, his son and two family members have tested positive for the coronavirus in Mumbai.

Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, his son and two family members have tested positive for the coronavirus in India's financial and entertainment capital Mumbai, a government minister said on Sunday.

Nanavati Super Specialty Hospital reported that Amitabh Bachchan was stable with mild symptoms in an isolated unit.

The 77-year-old Bachchan said in a tweet on Saturday that he had tested positive and had appealed to those who had been with him in the last ten days to test himself.

His son Abhishek Bachchan, 44, tweeted on Saturday night that he too had tested positive and was in the hospital.

Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Top tweeted on Sunday that Abhishek Bachchan's wife Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and their 8-year-old daughter also tested positive. Bollywood Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is the top actress in Bollywood.

Top did not say whether Opera Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and daughter Aradhya were quarantined at home or hospitalized.

Praveen Bachchan has acted in more than 200 Indian films in the last five decades. Bachchan is also a former politician and a television host.

The Bachchans are often called the first family in Bollywood. Amitabh Bachchan wife Jaya is also an actress and a one-time member of parliament.

The Press Trust of India news agency quoted Top as saying that Amitabh Bachchan and his son had a cough and fever. “They quickly tested the antigen and the results came back positive,” he said.

In 2015, the actor revealed that he had been treated for hepatitis B for more than two decades and that the disease had caused more than 75% of his liver damage. Since he was a comrade, he admitted himself to the hospital.

Veteran Bachchan's groundbreaking performance came in the 1973 film "Zanjeer" or "The Chain" and he became superstardom by playing a bold character, inspiring fans to imitate his hairstyle, dress and deep voice.

He entered politics briefly in 1975 but resigned in the middle of parliament when the administration of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi became a hotbed of corruption.

Back in the 1990s, Bachchan made a rare Hollywood appearance in Baz Luhrmann's 2013 edition of "The Great Gatsby" back in the film.

He got involved with fans on social media with the help of Twitter and Tumblr and hosted the Indian version of "Kun Bonega Millionaire", "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire".

Mumbai is one of the cities in India affected by a coronavirus. On Sunday, the country's virus case weight reached close to 850,000, with 28,637 new cases announced, the new one-day high for India.
